Vision Sports Ireland and Athletics Ireland are delighted to announce our upcoming Guide Running Workshop which will take place in Portlaoise college, Portlaoise, Co. Laois.
Participants will develop their knowledge and confidence across areas including:
- Understanding vision impairment
- Effective communication
- Coach considerations
- Sighted guide techniques
- Introduction to using a running tether
The workshop will begin with a bespoke Athletics Vision Sports Awareness Training session on Thursday, 24th of September from 19:00 – 21:00, which will provide the theory component of the course. This session will focus on understanding vision impairment within athletics, eye sight classifications, communication, inclusion and the key considerations when supporting athletes who are blind or vision impaired.
The in person practical session will take place in Portlaoise College Athletics Track, Portlaoise, Co Laois on Saturday 26th of September from 11:00 – 12:30, this will give participants the opportunity to apply their learning and develop the skills and confidence needed to guide a runner safely and effectively.
*Please note To complete the Guide Running Workshop and be registered as a guide, attendance is compulsory on both the online theory session on Thursday, 24th of September, and the practical session on Saturday, 26th of September.
The workshop is suitable for runners, coaches, club members, NGB staff and anyone interested in supporting greater participation in athletics for people who are blind or vision impaired.
