At Vision Sports Ireland, we always love to stay up to date with how our members are getting on with sport and physical activity out in the community. Today we caught up with Para Triathlete Donnacha McCarthy and his guide Sean Husband to hear all about their first Dublin City Marathon experience. Below is what Donnacha had to say about the experience:

My first Dublin Marathon experience is definitely one I won’t forget in a hurry for many reasons. Living on the marathon route, I have spectated for many years and it has always been something I’ve wanted to do. Running the idea by my coach, guide and friend Sean over the summer he said “lets give it a go as an end of season blowout”.

Having been focused on short course triathlon all season and targeting Paris qualification I was a little bit nervous to say the least but my main goals going into the race was to simply enjoy the experience and to get across the finish line!

There was a sense of nerves and excitement in equal measure as Sean and I jogged to the start line on Sunday morning and lined up with our fellow VI competitors and the other 20,000 runners taking part in the race, and before we knew it the gun had gone off and the race was started.

It was a busier start to what we’re normally used to so Sean needed to have his wits about him to guide me around cracks in the road, speed bumps and other compeditors but after a mile or so we were able to settle into a steady rhythm and began to tick off the miles. The support along the course was fantastic, and something I have heard about from runners who had done the Marathon previously but I honestly can’t remember a single point on the course that was completely silent! it was great as it gave me a boost in the dark periods you hit in every long distance race and the regular shout out’s always put a little pep back in our step.

As we ran up the famous heartbreak hill and onto the N11 we knew we were almost home, I began to slow a little at this stage, a combination of a long season and pretty bad blistering on my feet but the finish line wasn’t too far away. The final few shouts on Marrion Road went by in a blur and shortly I could hear the announcer and I knew the finish was in touch, I willed myself through the final 300m or so and crossed the finish line. It was an amazing sense of achievement and I hobbled to pick up my first marathon finishers medal.

A big thank you to VSI for helping me with my Marathon entry, to Dublin Marathon for organising such an amazing event and to the support out on the course, you don’t realise how many people you give a boost to while slogging out the miles! An finally to Sean for encouraging and getting me to the finish line, completing the marathon wouldn’t have been possible without him and we have been through many high’s and low’s this year so it was a great way to close out the season together.
