This week Vision Sports Ireland caught up with Emma Whelan. Emma is 15 years old. She is the eldest her family, she has two brothers Josh 13 & Aaron 10.
2. How did you first get involved sport ?
We are a very active sporty family, we love going on mountain walks & we have done hell & back.
From a young age I was involved in the football academy & my two brothers still love football. I used to swim, I was also in Templeogue club & also did a few galas. I did lifesaving in first year in secondary.
3. What is it that you enjoy most about sports and physical activity?
I am a very positive happy & quietly confident person. I love being outdoors & I would encourage everyone to get involved in a group or team sport. I’ve made so many good friends.
I have recently started Rock climbing & I’m enjoying learning new skills. Rock climbing can be competitive but for me at the moment it’s about practicing & improving my technique.
4. What would you consider to be your biggest sporting achievement to date big or small?
My biggest achievement is progressing very quickly through the climbing grades & that’s because I’m so dedicated & work hard.
5. Who do you admire most and why?
My parents always encourage & support me in everything I do, I admire my dad as he ran the Dublin Marathon in 2017, he always says “believe in yourself & you can achieve anything”.
6. What does sport mean to you?
Sports is a great way to meet new people, keep yourself fit in fun exciting way. Sport can be competitive but for me it’s about being part of a team that makes you feel safe & happy.
