Name: Emma Whelan
County: Dublin
Sport: Rock climbing
Athlete Story: We are a very active sporty family, we love going on mountain walks and we have done Hell & Back races.
From a young age I was involved in the football academy and my two brothers still love football. I used to swim, I was also in Templeogue Club and also did a few galas. I did lifesaving in first year in secondary. I am a very positive happy and quietly confident person. I love being outdoors and I would encourage everyone to get involved in a group or team sport. I’ve made so many good friends in doing so.
I have recently started rock climbing and I’m enjoying learning new skills. Rock climbing can be competitive but for me at the moment it’s about practicing and improving my technique.

Achievements: My biggest achievement is progressing very quickly through the climbing grades because of dedication and hard work.
Hero: My parents always encourage and support me in everything I do, I admire my dad as he ran the Dublin Marathon in 2017, he always says “believe in yourself & you can achieve anything”.
Advice: Sports is a great way to meet new people, keep yourself fit in fun exciting way. Sport can be competitive but for me it’s about being part of a team that makes you feel safe and happy. Give everything a go!
