Vision Sports Ireland and RNIB Northern Ireland, along with partners Disability Sport NI and Angel Eyes NI, today launch the Shared Island Sport Report. This innovative research provides the first dedicated insight into the physical activity and exercise engagement of blind and partially sighted people across Northern Ireland and the Border Counties.

The report, funded through the Shared Island Civic Society Fund from the Department of Foreign Affairs, was informed by survey data collected from 46 respondents across the region.

Key Findings:

  • Less than 1 in 20 children (<5%) are meeting the physical activity guidelines
  • Walking, swimming and cycling are the most popular sports for children and teens
  • Only 1 in 5 adults are meeting the physical activity guidelines
  • Nearly 1 in 2 people reported engaging in physical activity for fun
